Rental Property Inspections and Repairs

IS YOUR RENTAL PROPERTY A LIABILITY?

Recently I vacationed in a rental cabin, which was located in Lake Arrowhead.   As an inspector and seasoned construction superintendent, I always have my head on a swivel to determine the quality of construction of whatever I happen to be residing in.  While staying in the cabin I noticed several safety issues right off the bat.  First, none of the smoke detectors functioned, the fire extinguishers were empty and a tree limb was located directly over the chimney stack!  I also was concerned with the deck, which came off the master suite and would be perfect for entertaining. The deck had deteriorated support posts and the foundation bases were crumbling apart.  I couldn't believe the liability this rental property was exposing its owner to.  Not to mention my family and I, who's just renting the property out for the week.  Chances are everyone makes it out safe and has a great vacation experience. But codes and minimum safety requirements are in place for a reason and its usually because someone was killed or injured do to unsafe conditions.  I think its important for CRI to offer rental inspections and general repairs to its rental property owners.  To promote safe property ownership as well as intelligent property purchasing.
